SURVEYING WASHINGTON DC AND VIRGINIA
The Engineering Groupe offers surveying services throughout Washington, DC and Virginia. You can browse a partial list of our related services such as land planning and feasibility studies, or contact us today about your project for a consultation.
A brief overview of surveying
Surveying or land surveying is simply the science and technique of accurately determining land placement or three dimensional point placement and the angles and distances between them. Most of the time, these are points on the Earth’s surface. They are used to create land maps and boundaries, normally for ownership and governmental purposes.
Surveying is one of the oldest engineering techniques in the history of mankind. It was used in ancient Egypt to establish farm boundaries and, of course, to construct the great pyramids. Surveying progressed from there and the techniques and equipment have been continuously improved even to this day.
Types of surveys and applications
There are several different types of surveys used for various applications:
- Land Title and Mapping
- Archaeological surveys
- Construction surveys
- Bathymetric surveys
- Boundary surveys
- Deformation surveys
- Engineering design surveys
- Geological surveys
- Measured surveys
- Mortgage surveys
- Soil surveys
- Structural surveys
- Tape survey
- Topographic survey
Surveying techniques and equipment
Surveying today uses a variety of modern techniques and equipment. Hardware may include GPS, laser rangefinders, field computers and real-time cartography.
Historically, of course, different and less advanced equipment was used including:
- Gunter’s chains
- Steel or invar tapes
- Telescopes with reticles
These items have been replaced by modern equipment and advanced techniques using that equipment.
Typical surveying services
Some typical surveying services will include ALTA/ACSM surveys, platting services, topographical surveys, and boundary surveys.
